What Is IDOC Inmate Search? Understanding State DOC Systems

“IDOC” is an acronym used by multiple states for their Department of Corrections: Idaho (Idaho Department of Correction), Illinois (Illinois Department of Corrections), and Indiana (Indiana Department of Correction). Each state operates its own independent prison system with its own inmate search portal.

Beyond these three, every US state has a Department of Corrections (DOC) that manages state prisons and provides a free public inmate search tool. This guide covers all 50 state DOC systems with verified official links.

ℹ️ Key Distinction: State DOC systems only show sentenced state prison inmates. If someone was just arrested and is awaiting trial, they are in a county jail — a completely separate system. For county jails, search the county sheriff’s website. For federal inmates, use bop.gov/inmateloc.

How to Search for a State Prison Inmate — Step by Step

Every state DOC provides a free online inmate search. The process is nearly identical across all 50 states.

  1. Identify which state the person was sentenced in. This may be different from where they were arrested — inmates can be transferred.
  2. Go to that state’s official DOC website — links for all 50 states are in Section 04 below. Look for “Inmate Search,” “Offender Search,” or “Offender Locator.”
  3. Enter the inmate’s name (last name + first name or initial). Most systems also accept the DOC number / inmate ID / SID number for exact matches. Partial name searches usually work (e.g., “Jam” matches “James” and “Jameson”).
  4. Review results: Current facility, sentence dates, offense description, projected release date, parole eligibility, and custody status.
  5. Record the DOC/inmate number — you need this for everything: mail, money deposits, visitation requests, and phone account setup.
💡 If you can’t find them: They may be in county jail (not yet sentenced), in federal custody (separate system), in another state, recently released/paroled, or listed under a different name or alias. Try the county jail roster first, then the federal BOP locator.

Prison Visitation, Commissary & Phone Calls — How It Works

Visitation

  • 📋The inmate must add you to their approved visitor list first. You cannot show up unannounced.
  • 🔍Background check required — takes 7–30 days depending on the state. Always confirm before traveling.
  • 📅Schedule in advance through the facility’s visitation system or phone.
  • 🪪Valid, unexpired government photo ID required every visit.
  • 👔Dress code strictly enforced — conservative clothing, no resemblance to inmate uniforms.
  • 📹Video visits available at most facilities through Securus, GTL/GettingOut, or the state DOC portal.

Federal Inmates — NOT in State DOC Systems

If someone was arrested by federal agents (FBI, DEA, ATF, CBP, U.S. Marshals), they will never appear in any state DOC search. Federal and state systems are completely separate.

Frequently Asked Questions

IDOC is used by three states: Idaho Department of Correction, Illinois Department of Corrections, and Indiana Department of Correction. Each is a separate state agency operating its own prison system.
Yes. Every state DOC inmate search is completely free and publicly accessible. No account, subscription, or payment is needed.
Common reasons: they’re in county jail (not yet sentenced/transferred to state prison), in federal custody (separate BOP system), in another state, recently released or paroled, or listed under a different name/alias. Try the county sheriff’s roster or BOP locator.
County jails hold pre-trial detainees and short sentences (usually under 1 year). State prisons (DOC) hold convicted felons serving longer sentences. These are completely separate systems with separate databases and search tools.
The inmate must add you to their approved visitor list. A background check runs on you (7–30 days). Schedule through the facility’s system. Bring valid photo ID. Dress code is strictly enforced. Video visits are often available through Securus or GTL.
Most states use JPay, Access Corrections, or GTL/ViaPath. You need the inmate’s full name and DOC number. Online deposits, phone, app, and some in-person kiosk options available.
Federal inmates are NOT in state DOC systems. Use the Federal Bureau of Prisons Inmate Locator. For immigration detainees: ICE Detainee Locator.
Yes — every single call is recorded and may be monitored by law enforcement. Never discuss case details, ongoing investigations, or anything that could be used as evidence. Only discuss logistics.
